The West New York Edition

The town the avenue runs through.

Fifty-two thousand neighbors on one square mile of Palisades — high-rises below, a string of cliff-top parks above, and Bergenline Avenue straight down the middle. The Beat's second edition opens its file here. Our first full issue is in production; this is the town it will cover.

The story so far

  • 1898

West New York incorporates on July 8, replacing Union Township after a referendum three days earlier.

  • Early 1900s

The town booms with North Hudson's textile and embroidery trades — the "Embroidery Capital of the United States."

  • Mid-century

Large Italian- and German-American communities shape the town's blocks and tables.

  • 1960s →

The Cuban émigré influx remakes the town; today it is majority Hispanic — a pillar of "Havana on the Hudson."

  • 1980s →

Hudson Waterfront redevelopment era begins along the river below the cliffs.

  • Today

52,912 people on 0.99 square miles of land — one of the densest communities in America.

Bergenline through town

Bergenline Avenue is West New York's main commercial thoroughfare — the middle of the multi-town Miracle Mile, carrying the "Havana on the Hudson" retail strip through the center of town. Town Hall sits on 60th Street, the major east–west crosstown street. And a local claim to fame: more than half of U.S. Presidents have streets in West New York named after them.
